9552 Common Devices
PCMCIA:
The 720 and 720C PCMCIA slot can accommodate two Type
I, Type II or one Type III PC cards. The chipset conforms to the
PCMCIA PC Card Standard Release 2.01 and the PCMCIA Card and Socket Services
Specification Release 2.0, dated November 1992. This emerging standard
allows for the insertion of many devices, such as mass storage, memory
and communications.
The PCMCIA Device Driver Diskette
comes with the system unit and contains PCMCIA Socket Services Release
2.0 for DOS, PCMCIA Card Services Release 2.0 for DOS and PCMCIA Socket
Services Release 2.0 for OS/2 (R). (Ed.
Not supported under W9x or NT.)
The ThinkPad systems also support
a Suspend/Resume function when the PCMCIA card is installed. For
example, when the user is operating with a communications application and
PCMCIA card, after a Suspend/Resume operation the user does not need to
restart the operating system or communications application. Refer
to LIMITATIONS section.
o When ejecting PCMCIA cards, ejection
of both cards will occur when two PCMCIA Type I or Type II cards
are installed at the same time.
TRACKPOINT II:
The ThinkPad 720 and 720C provides a unique cursor-pointing
device called TrackPoint II, which is built into the keyboard. It
works like the mouse and allows the user to point and select icons on the
screen under control of the application. It consists of a device
that stands between the "G" and "H" keys, accompanied by two "Click-Buttons",
which are positioned below the space-bar. The device reacts to pressure
from the finger-tip and the left button is used for selecting or dragging
items on the screen. The right button simulates the Enter key in some applications.
DISPLAY (MONOCHROME):
A 9.5-inch diagonal LCD, Supertwisted Neumatic (STN) 640
x 480 pels, Video Graphics Array (VGA) resolution, cold florescent sidelighted
display with an 18 to 1 contrast ratio. Depending on the application, up
to 64 grey scales can be addressed. It displays black characters on a white
background and it may be reversed to a white on black mode by a simple
switch operation.
DISPLAY (COLOR):
A 10.4-inch diagonal color LCD, thin film transistor (TFT)
640 x 480 pels, Video Graphics Array (VGA) resolution, cold fluorescent
sidelighted display with a 100 to 1
(minimum) contrast ratio. Depending on the application,
256 colors are available simultaneously out of a palette of 4,096 colors
in VGA mode (640 x 480). There are over 921,000 thin film transistors
used in its construction, and with advanced manufacturing techniques a
defect rate of less than .00002 can be maintained. This quality state
of the art VGA screen provides clear, bright, vibrant colors approaching
cathode-ray-tube technology.
The external input device port can have the following devices connected:
- IBM PS/2 Miniature Mouse (#5443, 07G0033)
- IBM PS/2 Numeric Keypad (#5445, 07G0032)
- IBM PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse Connector (#3145, 54G0441).
The IBM
PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse Connector is required when:
- Attaching an external keyboard
- Attaching an external keyboard and
mouse.

AC ADAPTER:
The AC adapter is an AC to DC converter which supplies
the necessary power to the computer. The AC adapter also charges the battery
pack when it is installed in the computer.
o Input rating: 100-240 V AC, 2.0A, 50/60Hz
o Output rating:
- +20 V DC 2.0 A
- +20 V DC 2.5 A (Expansion Cartridge
attachment)
- Battery Pack: 10.8 V DC, 1450mAH/cell,
18 cell/pack
o Operating temperature 5 -- 35 (degs) C (41 -- 95 (degs)
F).
NIMH BATTERY PACK:
o Rechargeable battery pack for 4 to 8 hours (monochrome)
or 2.4 to 4.8 hours (color) of use, depending on operating, environmental
and application characteristics. When on AC power, an idle or operating
system unit can charge the battery in approximately 1.5hours (mono/color).
The system internal quick charge takes approximately 1.4 hours (monochrome/color)
during Suspend and power-off with AC adapter connected.
o The battery pack is an internal power source to the computer
when the AC adapter is not available. The battery pack is rechargeable
and is charged using the AC adapter or the ThinkPad Quick Charger,
which can charge two battery packs simultaneously. With a fully charged
battery pack, the user can operate the computer up to 8 hours (monochrome)
or 4.8 hours (color) depending on the application and the configuration
usage. PC Cards that do not support the power management function
may cause the shorter battery operation hours.
In summary, the battery operation

The ThinkPad 700 and 720C systems
also support a suspend/resume function when the PCMCIA card is installed.
For example, when you are operating with the communication application
with PCMCIA cards, after suspend/resume you do not need to restart the
operating system and communication application.
NIMH BATTERY PACK WITH POWER STATUS INDICATORS:
A rechargeable battery pack with five power status LED
indicators and one push button located on the front bezel of a battery
pack. These five LEDs show how much the battery power remains when
the user is pushing the button. In full-charged state, all five LEDs
are lit. One LED means
about 20% of battery power. The battery operation hours and charging
times are the same as those of the standard NiMH battery pack.
QUICK CHARGER:
The quick charger has two slots to charge two battery packs
simultaneously. Charging begins on the first battery pack installed,
then after it is completely charged, the other installed battery pack is
charged. A REFRESH BUTTON is provided for each battery pack slot
to DISCHARGE the battery packs before charging them. There are identifiers
and indicators that tell the charging
status for each battery pack installed.
SECURITY BASE:
It is designed to prevent unauthorized operation of the
computer in the following ways:
o Bolts down the system on the desk
o Keylocks system in the security base with the hard disk
locking mechanism (padlock optional)
o Prevents removal of hard disk
o Prevents removal of IC DRAM cards and coprocessor
o Prevents access to the screw holes in the system
o Prevents access to the system expansion and I/O connectors.
SECURITY UTILITY DISKETTE:
The user can set a privileged access password to the system
to limit the use of the system program. Once the password is set,
the boot drive selection and/or an I/O port usage can be protected from
tampering by any of the reference diskettes.

IBM THINKPAD PORT REPLICATOR
The ThinkPad Port Replicator can be attached to all ThinkPad
700/720/C systems. The Port Replicator is designed to provide a convenient
way to detach/re-attach all attached peripherals, for example, a printer,
when the "portable" computer is taken from one location to the other. Installation
of the port replicator is simply snapping onto the system expansion connector.
No additional features are required for use. The Port Replicator
extends the bus signals of the system expansion connector to a keyboard/numeric
keypad, a mouse, an external display, a parallel and serial (9-pin) connectors.
The system AC adapter can be put in the plug guide. Thus, the peripherals
stay plugged into the Port Replicator that remains on the desk. Removal
procedure is simply done by using opening levers. A wire or chain
can be used to secure the port replicator on the desk.
KEYBOARD KEYGUARD:
This is a molded plastic keyboard overlay that has holes
for each key and an integrated TrackPoint II and click buttons. It
allows a user with mobility problems/muscle control problems to steady
a hand on the KeyGuard and press the key by reaching through the related
hole.
