3172 Current Operational Status

Original HERE

ICP Version 3.3 and Earlier
ICP Version 3.4 and Later

ICP Version 3.3 or Earlier
In a normal display, the Error indicator is off, which means that there are no errors pending and that the operator is not entering a command.  For ICP Version 3.3 or earlier, the operator can enter a command when the 3172 4-digit display is in this state.
Digit 1
Digit 2
Digit 3
Digit 4
2 appears when the ICP is first started; 1 appears if trace facility is active. 0 appears if 2 was previously displayed in this position and a keypad command other than Start Trace was entered This digit defines the number of TP adapters configured for this system that are not active

This digit defines the number of LAN adapters configured for this system that are not  operational

This digit defines the number of connections not active.  These host connections can be subchannels, logical paths, or subchannel indexes for LAN gateway or CTC.

| If all configured adapters are operational and the trace facility is not running, the 4-digit display shows:

200x
When ICP is first started and the Parallel Channel Adapter is installed, x indicates the number of subchannels not yet active for LAN or CTC connections.

When the ESCON Double-Slot Adapter is installed in a LAN gateway controller, x is the number of logical path connections not yet active. Each logical path is the combined addresses of the host link address, control unit logical address, and device address.

When the ESCON Double-Slot Adapter is installed in a CTC controller, x indicates the number of subchannel index connections not yet active. Each subchannel index connection address is associated with the combined control unit logical address and the device address.

000x
After the first operation involving the keypad, where x is the number of host connections not yet active. As each host connection becomes active, x is reduced by one. When all connections are active, x is 0.

ICP Version 3.4 or Later
| The manner in which current operational status is displayed has changed for ICP Version 3.4 or later. For these levels of ICP, the current operational status appears in this format:
Digit 1
Digit 2
Digit 3,4
2 appears when the ICP is first started; 1 appears if the trace facility is active. 0 appears if 2 was previously displayed in this position anda keypad command other than Start trace was entered. This digit defines the number of LAN adapters configured for this system that are not active.

These digits define the number of host connections not active. These connections can be subchannels or logical paths. The 2-digit value is displayed in decimal format

| If all configured adapters are operational and the trace facility is not running, and no errors were detected during IPL, the 4-digit display shows:

20xx
When ICP is first started and the PCA is installed, xx indicates the number of subchannels not yet active. As each host becomes active, xx is reduced by one. When all conditions are active, xx is 00.

When the ESCON Double-Slot Adapter or the ESCON Single-Slot Adapter is installed, xx is the number of logical path connections not yet active. Each logical path is the combined addresses of the ESCON Director link address to which the 3172 is attached, the control unit logical address, the device address, and the LPAR number. When all connections are active, xx is 00.

00xx After the first operation involving the keypad, where xx is the number of host connections not yet active. As each host connection becomes active, xx is reduced by one. When all connections are active, xx is 00.

Note: Under certain conditions under MVS, varying the IBM 3172 offline can cause MVS to place the device in a "boxed" state, which results in the rejection of any subsequent attempts to allocate the device. This prevents the subchannel pair from becoming active. If this is the case, an MVS command such as vary xxx, online, uncond (where xxx is the 3-byte device number of the 3172) must be entered at the host to "unbox" the device. If the problem persists, contact your provider of service for repair.
